Pros and Cons of Juicing Your Way to a Healthier You

Consuming more fruits and vegetables is undeniably one of the best ways to become healthier. Fruits and vegetables are low in calories, but they contain lots of fibers, vitamins, minerals, micro and macro elements, most of which are lost during heat processing such as steaming or cooking. So, you can benefit from all that nutritional value only if you consume your fruits and veggies raw, and one of the easiest and most delicious ways to make fruits and veggies a part of your daily diet is by squeezing them into tasty juices.

We have all been hearing about the wonderful effects these juices have on your health, but is juicing indeed that miraculous? The benefits of juicing are still very much debated by medical researchers, so here are a few pros and cons listed in an attempt to answer that question.

The Pros of Juicing

Juicing is certainly an excellent way to have a healthy diet for those who don’t like veggies and fruits too much. If eating fruits and vegetables is not part of your diet yet, either because you don’t like salads or because you don’t find the time to browse recipes, you can still provide your body with the healthy amount of nutrients by throwing in apples, oranges, celery and a carrot or two into your juicer, then downing the tasty, colorful liquid quickly.

You can practically juice any fruit and vegetable and you can create concoctions that you like – only your imagination is the limit. You can make all-fruit or all-vegetable mixes or you can combine fruit and vegetable juices to create new flavors.

Juicing can also help you save money by not having to throw out fruits or veggies that are no longer attractive, but not yet spoiled either.

What Are the Cons?

There is no medical evidence to back up the idea that consuming fruit juices is healthier than consuming the fruits and veggies in solid form are, and there is no proof that consuming fruit and vegetable juices helps with weight loss efforts. If you come and think of it, these juices contain high quantities of minerals and vitamins, but they are also high in fructose and contain about half the protein as eating the whole fruit . Consequently, juices can be considered to be valuable additions to an otherwise almost balanced diet, but they should be used to add variety and improve health and not to replace major meals.

Other concerns about juicing:

  • It is expensive – you will probably have to use more than one helping of fruits and veggies to make a glass of juice;
  • Consuming your healthy ingredients in liquid form will leave you feeling less full than if you ate them in solid form, so you might want to have more than one helping of juice, which may lead to a calories excess;
  • Juicers eliminate much of the fiber in the ingredients you put in the machine, making your fruits and veggies a less potent source of fiber.

Juices are undeniably good for you. Use them to add variety to your diet; you can even replace one of your main meals with your favorite fruit and veggie mix – you will see that you will soon get to like fruits and veggies more, but do not rely entirely on your juices as your main sources of nutrients.
